Sergeant "STUBBY"
America’s first war dog, "STUBBY", served 18 months on the frontline in World War I. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, located and comforted the wounded, carried their mail, caught a German spy by the seat of his pants, and more. Back home his exploits were big news and made the front page of every major newspaper. "STUBBY" is the most decorated war dog of all time. The men of the 102nd  infantry hung a "Victory Medal" from his collar. Here he proudly stands for a picture with his special "Gold Medal". He was introduced to President Woodrow Wilson and was invited to the White House by both U.S. President Coolidge and President Harding for visits. He was personally decorated by General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, who called him "A Hero of the Highest Caliber". "STUBBY" was a honorary life member of the American Legion, the Red Cross and the Y.M.C.A.. Accordingly, "STUBBY" marched at full attention and at ease in many parades. He was the mascot of World War I, the United States of America, and Georgetown University in Massachusetts. In fact, "STUBBY" was instrumental in inspiring the creation of the "U.S. K-9 Corps", just in time for World War II. Well over 55,000 American dogs have served this country during the last 60 years, cutting human casualties by better than 65 percent where ever they were assigned to frontlines as sentries or scouts. The dogs and the handlers who "took point" in Vietnam have been credited with preventing more than 10,000 deaths there alone.
