The famous "PINCHER" of London, England   signed   1860
"PINCHER" won 30 matches under English rules of which 5 of the opponents expired. "PINCHER" was popular for many years and other resembling dogs were named after him.
John P. Colby's "PINCHER" won 24 to 40 matches and also carried PINCHER's name on. In recent years it has been said and written "Why would John P. Colby, an Irishman, name a dog PINSCHER after the german word meaning terrier"?, when in fact, the word pinch first came from England,
a descriptive used for the cropping of ears and docking of tail as did the word PINCER, a type of bite.
Their proper name was "PINCHER", not PINSCHER; and John P. Colby was an Englishman, not an Irishman.

IN THE BRAVE DAYS, OF GIANTS AND DRAGONS.   "Notice the Dogs".
(From the painting by G.- Surang.)   signed   1382
COURAGE is best cultivated by exposure to severe vicissitudes. The Scandinavian people understood this truth so well that they encouraged belief in monsters, and their lives accordingly were constantly incited to valorous deeds. In time even the best educated classes came to accept as true that dragons existed in the fastnesses of mountains and fells. This belief spread to every part of Europe and the British Islands, until persuit of such imaginary creatures became the ambition of the adventurous, whose fervid fancy pictured dragons as being keepers of infinite treasure and devourers of beautiful damsels. The order of knighthood may be said to have originated with this strange conception, and the old faith is embalmed in many Gothic, German and Old English tales.
